Published by: LifeWorks,

Company background

As one of the 10 largest banks in the U.S., TD Bank employs more than 26,000 people in the U.S. and serves nearly 8 million customers. TD Bank offers retail, small business and commercial banking products and services at more than 1,300 locations on the East Coast. The organization takes a retail approach to serving customers, offering extended hours of operations and easy to understand products.

The challenge

The human resources department at TD Bank is dedicated to improving employees’ well-being. Like employees across all industries, individuals at TD Bank face stressors caused by critical incidences and the demands of work and life. Partnering with Ceridian LifeWorks, TD Bank sought to offer an employee assistance program (EAP) that fosters a culture of employee engagement.

The solution

  • TD Bank understands the importance of employee engagement.
  • Life circumstances combined with the stressors of work can create obstacles for employees’ success.
  • Ceridian LifeWorks enables TD Bank to boost employee engagement through online resources,
  • educational sessions and access to trained counselors.

Understanding the value of LifeWorks, TD Bank promotes this service as part of its benefits package. In addition to highlighting LifeWorks in recruitment and new hire resources, it is featured in an annual webinar held during open enrollment. TD Bank advertises LifeWorks as a free resource available to every employee, including relatives, regardless of whether they have the company’s medical benefits.

Helping employees manage emergency situations

In 2012, many of TD Bank’s employees were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Understanding employees’ need for immediate hurricane recovery information, the LifeWorks team developed and held a webinar within one week of the incident. This educational session provided insight into available LifeWorks services and FEMA resources. Additionally, webinar participants were directed to access more than 4,000 articles and resources available on LifeWorks.com.

“The LifeWorks counselors ensured that their response to the situation was well orchestrated and handled beautifully. They were sensitive, understanding and available to everyone that needed them.”
Susan Poniatowski, vice president and benefits manager, TD Bank
Like all financial institutions, TD Bank sometimes faces the threat of robbery. The LifeWorks team supports employees when these incidences occur by immediately sending counselors to the scene. This service is extremely helpful to employees and gives them perspective on the situation. In one instance, a robbery occurred during the middle of the night, and LifeWorks representatives were on site before employees arrived at work.

LifeWorks: A resource for today, tomorrow & the future

LifeWorks is also a valuable asset for the human resources department. TD Bank regularly receives articles focused on relevant topics. These publications often support the organization’s employee engagement activities and are published in newsletters and on the company’s intranet. In addition, TD Bank’s LifeWorks representative serves as a resource for its wellness council, which encourages healthy behaviors among employees.

Through its partnership with LifeWorks, TD Bank helps its employees juggle the demands of life. LifeWorks’ responsiveness to the organization’s needs contributes to and complements TD Bank’s employee engagement initiatives. By offering this EAP service, TD Bank creates an environment where employees feel valued and supported.
