Get Moving for Sport Relief

Published by: LifeWorks,

Everyone living in the UK is being challenged to get moving and count their steps with the aim of recording more than a billion steps a day for Sport Relief, the national biennial charity sport event.

From now until 23rd March, you’re encouraged to get your steps in however you can, whether it’s running, walking or even dancing. The event is also suitable for wheelchair users.

The event brings together the worlds of sport and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in the UK and the world’s poorest countries.

Sport Relief is a great reason to start getting fit, which has multiple mental and emotional benefits that contribute to your total well-being. If you’re looking for ways to walk a few extra steps every day, try these eight tips:

  • Instead of sitting while talking on the phone, get up and walk around. This can help to increase your daily steps.
  • Try keeping athletic shoes and clothes in your vehicle to be ready at any time for spontaneous activity.
  • Set an alarm on your phone, watch or computer to get up and move around every hour for 5-10 minutes during your day.
  • Try taking the stairs instead of using the lift.
  • Increase your daily steps by using a fitness tracker. First track your average daily steps over several days, then set a goal to increase by 500 steps/day.
  • Try using the restroom that is farthest away and take the stairs to get there, if possible.
  • When you are tempted to go and get a snack, get up and walk around for a few minutes instead
  • If your errands are close by, walk or bike instead of driving to them.

To help you keep track of your steps and to be sure that they count towards the national total, download the Sport Relief app for free from the Sport Relief website.
